Description:
The proposed conference session centers on the critical role of housing in environment-related health outcomes, with a particular interest in extreme weather events. Extreme weather is defined broadly, and may include heat, hurricanes, compounding natural disasters, etc. Potential presentations may cover topical methodological issues, such as what aspects of the home environment should be assessed in research on extreme weather health impacts, evidence to date on the role of housing in health impacts from extreme weather, and proposed policy solutions, including innovative financial models to address housing infrastructure and medical assistance. A critical focus of this session will be on environmental justice, with an emphasis on housing and infrastructure concerns, and resulting health disparities, in marginalized and disinvested communities, across both renter and homeowner populations. The session will also examine the current state of evidence and research gaps in understanding the session topic, and how research can be used to inform policy and practice.
