Session The Road Less Traveled: Uncommon Career Paths within Operational Meteorology

Description:

One of the common misconceptions about career paths within operational government meteorology is the unwritten rule that you have to check specific job-position boxes to move into your eventual desired role. For example, National Weather Service meteorologists often begin at a local Weather Forecast Office, and progress through the forecaster ranks before moving into a management or headquarters role. While in the past this may have been accurate, the rapid change occurring within operational government meteorology as a result of new technology and the inclusion of new skill sets is bringing significant opportunities to the forefront that rarely existed before. Additionally, unprecedented job flexibilities such as remote and location negotiable positions are opening up exciting new opportunities to a much larger and more diverse audience.

This session will highlight career paths that deviate from the traditional stereotypes within operational government meteorology. Additionally, the session will include brainstorming of what future career paths could look like amidst this period of rapid change, via panel discussions and informative talks. Current professionals who have a unique story to tell will be especially valuable, whether that means coming from a non-traditional background, or taking on unique professional roles. The ultimate goal is to help bring awareness to professionals and students alike about the exciting possibilities that await.
