Session Urban Hydrology, Flood Hazards and Risks

Description:

Urban floods can be flashy and cause widespread damage due to the high concentration of population and poor drainage infra-structure.  Among mitigation strategies commonly used are regulatory floodplain mapping, flood monitoring and warning, emergency notification apps, and structural improvements.  Advanced flood forecasting, early flood detection, and timely communication of flood threats prior to and during storms are examples of ways in which a flood warning system can help reduce flood risk in urban environments.  This topical session is intended to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration between atmospheric scientists and urban hydrologists to discuss how the flood threat in urban areas can be reduced.  Topical presentations are sought in:
- Hydrometeorology in urban environments
- Flood detection and measurements techniques
- Design storms due to changing rainfall intensities
- Vulnerability assessment of drainage systems
- Integration of flood warning with traffic management
- Lessons learned from emergency notifications
- Coastal flooding of urban centers
- Lessons learned from past flooding events

We also invite case studies and discussions on urban hydrological monitoring systems, particularly their implementation in the City of New Orleans. Topics of interest include the city's Automated Flood Warning System (AFWS), stormwater modeling, and comprehensive planning for enhancements in both green and grey stormwater infrastructure.
