Description:
Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool in geophysics, revolutionizing data analysis, modeling, and prediction capabilities. However, the adoption of AI in geophysical research and applications raises critical questions about trustworthiness and ethics. While Policies are being established to mandate trustworthy and ethical AI, such as the U.S. Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence, there is little clarity on what this means for scientists and developers. This session aims to explore the multifaceted aspects of trustworthy and ethical AI with an emphasis on implementation challenges and examples. We invite contributions that delve into the following themes:
- Trustworthiness in AI Models: How can we ensure the reliability, accuracy, and robustness of AI models used in geophysical research and applications? What methods and techniques can be employed to assess and validate the trustworthiness of AI-driven predictions and insights?
- Ethical Considerations in Geophysical AI: What ethical challenges arise from the use of AI in geophysics, such as data privacy, algorithmic bias, and societal implications? How can ethical principles, such as transparency, fairness, and accountability, be integrated into AI-enabled geophysical research and decision-making processes?
- Interpretability and Explainability: How can we enhance the interpretability and explainability of AI models in geophysics to facilitate understanding and trust among stakeholders? What strategies can be employed to communicate AI-generated insights and uncertainties effectively to policymakers, scientists, and the public?
- Community Engagement and Governance: What roles do interdisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder engagement play in fostering trustworthy and ethical AI practices in geophysics? How can we establish governance frameworks and best practices to promote responsible AI use and mitigate potential risks?
