Session The World Needs Scientists Engaged in Advocacy and Activism – Here’s Where to Start.

Description:

At the Climate Science Legal Defense Fund, our mission is to empower scientists who seek to put their expertise to work to safely and effectively advocate for science. In this session, CSLDF attorneys will discuss several different ways that scientists can protect themselves, both personally and professionally, while engaging in activism. We will explain:

  • The do's-and-don'ts of interacting with Congress on legislative policy.
  • Best practices for engaging in political advocacy outside of the workplace.
  • Your First Amendment rights as a scientist and which important Supreme Court cases you need to know.
  • How you can begin sharing your expertise and supplementing your income as an expert witness.
  • How to safely and smartly participate in collective action like rallies, marches, and protests.

The attorneys at CSLDF will also cover the potential pitfalls of advocacy work, with the aim of ensuring that scientists can participate to the fullest extent possible while minimizing the risk of negative repercussions to their jobs, reputations, and family lives.
