A CASE STUDY OF THERMODYNAMIC PROFILE RETRIEVAL USING A MICROWAVE RADIOMETER AT VERTICAL AND OFF-VERTICAL INCIDENCE
Scott D. Landolt, NCAR, Boulder, CO; and R. Tardif and P. H. Herzegh
A 12-channel microwave profiling radiometer is a passive instrument that provides both temperature and water vapor profiles from the surface up to 10km in height. Unlike radiosonde data which is collected twice a day, the profiling radiometer can provide soundings once every six minutes.
The location of the radiometer on Long Island, NY, allows many different weather regimes to be sampled at a higher frequency than radiosondes. This includes low ceiling and visibility events, as well as various precipitation events.
As a preliminary step in the analysis, a comparison of the co-located radiosonde profiles versus the derived profiles from the radiometer was done to assess the overall performance of the instrument. Results from specific case study analyses are also presented showing the ability of the radiometer to represent the structure of the lower troposphere during changing weather phenomena.
