GWINDEX—GOES RAPID-SCAN WINDS EXPERIMENT: APPLICATIONS FOR WEST COAST FORECASTING
Christopher S. Velden, CIMSS/Univ. of Wisconsin, Madison, WI; and D. Stettner, J. Daniels, and W. Bresky
The GOES rapid-scan WINDs EXperiment (GWINDEX) was conducted in January-March, 2001. Special 7.5-minute rapid scan images from GOES-10 over the eastern North Pacific were used to create wind vector datasets on an hourly basis. This wind information was used in mission planning and forecasting by concurrent field experiment activity such as PACJET. The datasets were also ingested in real time into a special run of the RUC model. Impact studies are underway, and will be presented at the conference.
