Local Aviation Weather Hazards of Atlantic Canada

In early 2000, the Meteorological Service of Canada was contracted by NAV CANADA to study and compile local aviation weather hazards across all of Canada, from Atlantic to Pacific to Arctic Oceans. When completed, the project will have produced six aviation weather manuals, corresponding to the Canadian graphic area forecast regions. The first of these manuals was completed for Atlantic Canada in the autumn of 2001. The lead researcher, a pilot and meteorologist, travelled throughout the region interviewing dozens of pilots and other local weather experts. The level of detail in the information gathered could only be attained through conversations with those who are affected by local weather hazards on a day to day basis. The process leading to the completion of this manual will be described and selected map-based results displayed. The prime goal of this project is to enhance aviation safety by providing a compendium of well-organized, easy to read local aviation weather effects to pilots, dispatchers and briefers.
