Catastrophe is the sudden transition from one (quasi-) equilibrium state, whose existence can no longer be sustained when an external parameter passes a critical value, to another pre-existing (quasi-) equilibrium state. It is argued that tropical cyclogenesis is a catastrophe. Implications of the catastrophic nature of tropical cyclogenesis are discussed.
