Interactions between synoptic-scale and mesoscale eddies near the extratropical tropopause
Eddies of varying scales are evident in satellite imagery of the extratropical tropopause during strongly cyclonic and anticyclonic episodes. Sub-synoptic eddies embedded within large-scale cyclonic patterns appear to be related to mesoscale surface windstorm events in some cases. In strongly anticyclonic regimes, mesoscale eddies appear to be related to inertial instability and very small-scale clear-air turbulence reports in some episodes. However, the dynamical mechanisms relating the large-scale eddies to these mesoscale features, and in turn relating these mesoscale features to the even smaller events that directly impact society, are not well understood. In this presentation we investigate the dynamical setting of mesoscale eddies near the extratropical tropopause using geostationary satellite water vapor and ozone retrievals. Satellite-derived and/or operational model dynamical products will also be used to characterize the evolution of the three-dimensional wind fields in the presence of mesoscale tropopause structures, for the purpose of detecting interactions between the synoptic-scale and mesoscale eddies.
