Important Signatures to Look for in Ozone Recovery (Invited Speaker)

Betsy Weatherhead, CIRES/Univ. of Colorado, Boulder, CO

The recovery of the ozone layer from anthropogenic chemical depletion is an important process for scientific, environmental and societal reasons. Critical stages of this recovery have already occurred: the reduction of ozone depleting substances near the surface, the reduction of ozone depleting substances in the stratosphere, and an apparent cessation of continued decline of ozone at specific layers in the atmosphere. However, the complexity of ozone production, loss and distribution implies that future ozone records may be punctuated by low ozone values. What are the critical questions to ask of the emerging data? What level of confidence can we put on the changes observed? What signs can be indicative of causes of changes in ozone? These questions will be addressed along with an update of analyses of emerging data.
