The stratospheric ozone signatures of the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation as observed by the JPL lidar located at Mauna Loa Observatory, HI

Using over twelve years of nighttime differential absorption lidar (DIAL) ozone measurements obtained by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii, the stratospheric Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) signatures (15-55 km) in ozone are revealed. In an earlier study using 6 years of data at the same site, the clearest QBO signature in stratospheric ozone maximized near 31 km and was seasonally synchronized in late winter-early spring and out-of-phase with the expected equatorial ozone QBO anomaly. Other signatures were observed in winter-spring near 47 km, in summer near 26 km, and in winter-spring near 22 km, respectively in-phase, in-phase, and out-of-phase with the expected equatorial ozone QBO. These anomalies in ozone will be reviewed in the present updated study including 12 years of data, and will be compared to other previously observed and modeled QBO anomalies.
