Climatology, trends and variability of the dynamical forcings of the stratospheric zonal flow and ozone transport

The troposphere-stratosphere coupling is currently drawing a lot of interest since the stratosphere was shown to have a significant impact on climate change. This study aims at better understanding the physical processes responsible for driving variations in the stratospheric dynamics. We use the Transformed Eulerian-Mean formulation and the ECMWF ERA-40 reanalysis to investigate the various dynamical forcings of wave-mean flow interaction and to evaluate the dynamical transport of ozone and its significance compared to radiative-chemical effects. Stratospheric variability associated with tropospheric phenomena, such as ENSO, and dramatic trends, including jet shifts and polar vortex intensification, are presented.
