ABSTRACT
This paper studied thunderstorm and rainfall forecasting in Nigeria, using some weather parameters and convective cloud Temperature from satellite imageries. The area covered on this research is Nigerian domain, although the result is applicable to the West African States as they share the same climatic characteristics. The method employed in this work is assessing the synoptic weather features using thermodynamic, dynamic and cloud top temperature from infrared 10.8µm band satellite imagery channel; the result shows that the thermodynamic and dynamic features of weather parameters inform the weather conditions in Nigeria at any point in time. It equally showed that when the features on the real time satellite imagery conform to valid model weather charts from surface to upper layer in the atmosphere, this will always yield a very good forecast of thunderstorms and rainfall. Accurate and timely thunderstorm and rainfall forecasts are achievable, when we reconcile the real time satellite imageries and valid model projections.
