228 NOAA’s Joint Polar Satellite System's (JPSS's) Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) Program—The Success of the PGRR Fire and Smoke Initiative in Positioning JPSS Capabilities to Enable Effective Response to U.S. Wildfires

Monday, 7 January 2019
Hall 4 (Phoenix Convention Center - West and North Buildings)
Bill Sjoberg, GST/JPSS Program Office, Lanham, MD; and M. Goldberg

This presentation will focus on the continuity of the NOAA Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) Program’s Proving Ground and Risk Reduction (PGRR) and key activities of the PGRR Initiatives. The presenter will provide details of the how for years the Fire and Smoke Initiative served as a collaborative forum for developers and users to evaluate what was needed to effectively respond to US wildfires and how satellite data and products could be tailored to better focus the responses. The 2018 US Fire Season and specific western US wildfires will be used as examples of how the Fire and Smoke Initiative successfully modified visualizations and algorithms in response to user feedback. It is anticipated that additional briefings in this symposium will build on the theme provided by this briefing and identify specific actions taken during these wildfires and the impact of these actions.
