We present a study using satellite data, ground-based observations and a global model to understand the aerosol trends in East and South Asia. We will (1) use the high resolution AOD data from the MODIS MAIAC retrieval to reveal the spatial and temporal variations of AOD, (2) relate the changes to the anthropogenic and natural emission changes in the regions, (3) link the AOD to surface PM2.5 measurements from the AirNow State Department networks located in several big cities in East and South Asia in different seasons. We will explain the AOD-PM2.5 relationship with ancillary data in order to assess the use of AOD for air quality applications.
