401 Improving the Software Development Lifecycle for NWS AWIPS

Tuesday, 8 January 2019
Hall 4 (Phoenix Convention Center - West and North Buildings)
Edward Mandel, NOAA/NWS, Silver Spring, MD; and A. Rivera, K. P. Johnson, R. Peter, S. Jacobs, S. Schotz, and W. Sellers

Anecdotally, nobody likes to see how the sausage is made. We invite everyone to take a look behind the curtain to see how the National Weather Service (NWS) Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) is managed and developed. The content and features associated with AWIPS have been presented to the AMS community over the years. However, the processes employed to accomplish the development and deployment of such a mission-critical system has not been presented outside of the teams working on AWIPS.

This poster will explain the procedures and best practices currently employed for AWIPS development. It will also outline upcoming improvements proposed by Raytheon, the prime contractor, that are jointly implemented by Raytheon and the NWS/Office of Central Processing.
