Exchanges of energy, water, and trace species between the atmosphere and the biosphere depend on and, in turn, affect the states of the atmosphere and biosphere themselves. With unprecedented rapid climate change and alteration of the landscape, one asks what is in store for the earth system. This talk examines the state of our understanding of biosphere-atmosphere interactions, and proposes a research agenda to advance model projections of the Earth System.
