NCAR / EOL deployed an Integrated Sounding System (ISS) on the RV Investigator in the Southern Ocean for the SOCRATES campaign during Jan-Feb 2018. SOCRATES (Southern Ocean Clouds, Radiation Aerosol Transport Experimental Study) was lead by Greg McFarquhar (Uni. Illinois), co-PIs from the University of Washington and many other collaborators. The study examined clouds, aerosols, air-sea exchange and boundary layer structure over the Southern Ocean with the aim of improving understanding of this region for climate and weather applications. Many systems were deployed, including the ISS on the Australian CSIRO research vessel Investigator. The Investigator sailed south from Tasmania to near the Antarctic coast line, crossing the polar front, cold fronts and cyclones. The ISS included a 915 MHz radar wind profiler, radiosonde soundings, ZephIR wind lidar, and a ceilometer. This poster will report on some of the challenges, measurements, data processing, and quality control issues from this ISS deployment.
