In the world of weather communications, words matter. However, as scientists, we often use the strict scientific and/or mathematical definitions, which the public doesn’t understand. We ask, "how does this help with our communication efforts?"
Recently, it has come to our attention that "accepted" terms like "climate," "weather," "cone of uncertainty,” probability of precipitation,” and "storm surge" are not disseminated nor interpreted well.
This presentation will showcase situations in which such disconnects have occurred and offer suggestions for correcting these.
