This presentation will highlight recent developments and near-term goals for the social scientific work of the FACETs (Forecasting a Continuum of Environmental Threats) initiative. Originally conceived of as an interdisciplinary framework for (1) improving the communication of forecast uncertainty, (2) providing more frequently-updated forecast information, and (3) improving the NWS watch-warning-advisory (WWA) system, early research with prototype technologies has revealed significant demand for this information. As the work has progressed however, new research trajectories have emerged, as well, especially regarding the application of the FACETs framework to the current deterministic WWA system. This presentation will review key research findings, provide an overview of new initiatives to bring more social science perspectives into the testing environment, and highlight the next steps for research and transition activities for FACETs.
