Here we present a new handbook on running Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) in the geosciences. Research internships play a key role in geoscience workforce development, and REUs are one mechanism intended to increase minority participation in the atmospheric sciences. This handbook is aims to provide support to those who run REU sites or other undergraduate research internships. It provides practical strategies and tips, examples, lessons learned, and numerous resources to help ensure that your program is a success. A wide range of topics is covered, from recruiting and selecting a diverse group of students to working with research mentors to training on sexual harassment prevention. This handbook provides guidance on providing science communication and professional development workshops, links to online materials, and an extensive list of resources for further reading. Strategies for increasing diversity and inclusivity are emphasized throughout the book.

This handbook was developed with contributions of knowledge and materials from members of the GEO REU Network over many years. This network is a community of people committed to providing high quality research experiences for undergraduate students. The handbook is scheduled for release in Spring 2020 and will be available online. Those interested in running an undergraduate atmospheric research internship are encouraged to use this handbook and to join the GEO REU email listserv.
