The very first weather satellites provided significant new observations and meteorological methods that developed new and improved weather applications. Lessons learned from early discoveries can help guide development of new satellite systems and instrumentation. This presentation focuses on discussion and documentation of early science discoveries and forecast improvements that formed the overall foundation of Satellite Meteorology. It communicates its past and future and adds value to our societal and economic welfare. The early meteorological satellite period covered here is 1960 to 1980.
