Much research has emphasized a gap in the wavenumber frequency domain between the things we call convectively coupled Kelvin waves and the things we call Madden Julian oscillation (MJO) events. Yet many convective disturbances over the Indo-Pacific warm pool region occur in between the two bands. New research works to describe such events and their similarities to both Kelvin waves and the MJO, with these categories both comprising parts of a continuum. This presentation discusses alternative explanations many people have raised for these events.
