When there's smoke, there's fire...except for when there isn't. But there will always be lightning with thunder. How are you communicating that to your viewers? Broadcast meteorologists have worked effectively to help viewers understand the pretty colors on the radar screen, but what do the dots/plus signs/lightning bolts on the map mean?
Let's review how lightning is detected, the types of lightning data received from lightning location systems, and how this data can be used in conjunction with radar data to paint a complete picture of the current weather situation. Examples will include winter, severe, and tropical weather, and post event uses.
