The Extreme Events Institute’s (EEI) International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) at Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, Florida, as a NOAA Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, is dedicated to make South Florida and beyond, Ready, Responsive and Resilient. The EEI-IHRC, in partnership with NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC), and funded by the Florida Division of Emergency Management, created a Spanish language hurricane information website (https://huracanes.fiu.edu/). The goal of the website is to help the Spanish-speaking community in the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico and Central America be better educated, informed and prepared for hurricanes, including safe-guarding their families, homes and businesses. Hosted by Florida International University, the website educates and informs the public about hurricane awareness, preparedness and mitigation and includes information on hurricane science, residential mitigation strategies, and descriptions of NHC information products, including tropical cyclone advisories. Florida International University is a majority-minority institution with a very diverse (predominantly Hispanic) student body and is recognized as an “R1: Doctoral Universities - Highest Research Activity” classification by the Carnegie Institute and as a Carnegie Community Engaged university.
