Description:
Recent surveys and a sweeping report from the National Academy of Sciences document a surprising and unacceptable level of unethical behavior in all sciences, including the geosciences. The American Geophysical Union, Geological Society of America, National Academy of Sciences, and other professional societies are taking a stand against harassment, bullying, and discrimination. The AMS is also taking a proactive approach to confront these problems.
The objective of this session is to raise visibility and facilitate discussion of scientific ethics and conduct, including topics such as harassment, discrimination, bullying, and bias. Increased awareness of these issues, and specific actions that can reduce or eliminate them, will promote a more inclusive, equitable, vibrant, and diverse AMS, and will help to improve the professional climate and culture of the society.
The session conveners welcome abstract submissions related to the aforementioned topics, including unconscious bias, sexual harassment, bystander intervention strategies, codes of conduct, microaggression, power differentials, mentor-mentee relations, the role of professional societies in setting ethical standards, policies and practices employed by partner organizations or other institutions, and specific cases such as field experiments.
We invite submissions from early, mid, or late-career practitioners, including students, in order to provide a diverse set of perspectives on these issues.
