A comparison of the convective and heating structures in Kelvin waves and the Madden-Julian Oscillation

Moist Kelvin waves and the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) are both prominent eastward-propagating convective disturbances in the tropics. Although these two disturbances have very different space and time scales, their horizontal and vertical structures are sufficiently similar to suggest some commonality in their dynamical coupling to convection and their propagation mechanisms. In this study, we will explore the horizontal and vertical temperature, wind, and heating fields of Kelvin waves and the MJO to assess their similarities and differences, as well as the degree to which linear dynamics can account for these structures. The data to be used in this study include NOAA OLR, ECMWF reanalysis, and CARDS radiosonde data. In addition, TRMM data will be used to categorize the convective makeup of these two disturbances, in terms of the horizontal distribution of shallow and deep convection, and stratiform precipitation. The goal of this study is to provide a better understanding of the convective-dynamical feedback mechanisms within Kelvin waves and the MJO. .
