A new method to initialize hurricanes in high resolution models has been developed. The method can be described as follows: 1) Separate hurricane component from environmental field, 2) correct the intensity of the hurricane component based on surface observations and the environmental field, 3) insert the corrected hurricane component back to the envirinmental field at the observed location. The new field can be used either as the intial field (in GFDL model) or as a first guess (in hurricane WRF model). We have done extensive tests using the new initial field in GFDL models. We will show the good intensity forecasts and describe the difficulties we have in the conference.
