Roof damage is quite common in hurricanes. This paper will discuss the common modes of failure to various roof coverings exposed to high winds including asphalt shingles, tile, and built-up roofing. Sections will include how wind damage occurs to a roof and how to delineate wind damage from pre-existing damage or deterioration. Several roof damage myths will be explored including granule loss on asphalt shingles, right corner cracks in tiles, and salt water spray exposure to asphalt roofing products.
