In this presentation, the traditional view of the large-scale meridional circulation in the tropics is challenged by introducing a shallow meridional circulation cell competing with the classic Hadley cell. This shallow meridional cell has been observed from several independent in situ observations and global model reanalyses. It undergoes a seasonal cycle distinct from that of the Hadley cell. Possible mechanisms and climatic significance of the shallow cell are discussed.
