The Emanuel cumulus parameterization scheme is being incorporated into the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System (COAMPSTM) as we continue to improve the model performance in track and intensity predictions of tropical cyclones (TC). The results of a previous study suggest that the modified Emanuel scheme implemented in NOGAPS has led to better TC track forecasts. The objective of this study is to implement this scheme into COAMPS and to evaluate its performance in the operational mesoscale model. Tropical cyclones of the 2002 and 2003 seasons are selected for this study. The impact of the Emanuel scheme on COAMPS TC track and intensity forecast will be examined. In addition, physical processes such as surface heating and moisture fluxes associated with convective cell initiation and maintenance will be studied and compared with those from the control runs using the Kain-Fritsch cumulus parameterization scheme. Detailed results will be presented at the meeting.
