Studies on secondary eyewall formation
Richelieu Room (Deauville Beach Resort)
While the dynamical and thermodynamical evolution of secondary and primary eyewalls in intense hurricanes is relatively well understood, the formation of the secondary eyewall feature is an enigmatic problem in comparison. Such features are relatively common in radar and in situ studies of intense hurricane vortices; however, few modeling studies have produced secondary eyewalls, leading to a general lack of understanding regarding their formation. In a preliminary examination of this problem, we examine secondary eyewall hypotheses from a variety of dynamical frameworks, including two-dimensional, QG, and full-physics model, to better identify the physical processes that may influence the formation of secondary eyewalls in intense hurricanes.
