The Satellite Analysis Branch (SAB) of NOAA's Satellite and Information Service (NESDIS) prepares satellite intensity and position estimates for tropical systems around the world. Since 1997, SAB has employed an objective Dvorak technique developed by the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS), University of Wisconsin, to aid in assessing the current intensity of tropical cyclones. The results of a validation of the Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique (AODT) v6.4.2 run in fully automated mode and in a manual mode during the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season will be presented. A comparison between both modes of the AODT and the subjective Dvorak estimates of the SAB will also be shown.
