P4.4 Intensity change of simulated tropical cyclones

The mechanisms of changing the intensity of tropical cyclones are examined using the numerical simulation results of several real hurricane cases. Hurricane Wilma (2005), which experienced rapid intensification and weakening, and Hurricane Emily (2005), which had strong eyewall convections are simulated using National Center for Atmospheric Researh (NCAR) Weather research and Forecasting (WRF) Model Version 2 (WRFV2). The simulations are performed using high-resolution horizontal grid spacing (less than 2km) in order to resolve small-scale eyewall convections explicitly. The role of asymmetries on the change of hurricane intensity is examined through energetics perspective. The alteration of the energy flows by the asymmetries are closely related to the intensity change of tropical cyclones.
