Session Fifty Year History of GOES

Description:

October 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) program. GOES-A was launched on October 16, 1975 and sent the first image as GOES-1 on October 25, 1975. Since then these satellites have continuously monitored everything from volcanic eruptions and hurricanes to intense blizzards and wildfires. The GOES imager evolved from the two spectral bands of the GOES-1/3 imager to the modern 16 spectral bands on the current GOES-R series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI). The GOES sounder started with the experimental VAS on GOES-4 and the 19-channel operational GOES Sounder on GOES-8 through 15.

Abstracts discussing the history of GOES, impacts of GOES on numerical weather prediction and forecasting, impacts of GOES on environmental hazard monitoring, and other impacts of GOES are welcome.
