Two tropical convective systems with differing organization are simulated from TRMM LBA using the Goddard Cumulus Ensemble (GCE) model, a cloud-resolving model (CRM). Control simulations using an un-modified bulk microphysical scheme and typical CRM grid resolutions are contrasted against those using key improvements to the bulk microphysics aimed at reducing the over abundance of precipitation-sized ice in the model and finer resolution. The results are evaluated with ground-based radar data and satellite scattering signatures. The improved physics and grid resolution are shown to produce much more realistic simulations.
