Multiple CAM ensembles are used to provide insight on how climatologies may or may not be useful to creating information relevant to probabilistic severe weather predictions. Most severe weather proxy variables are correlated with updraft helicity. One framework to attach meaning to updraft helicity magnitude is to analyze storm character and storm environment. However, to fully understand what these ensembles and individual storms are capable of (e.g., rotation), we have to search for the features (transient or long lived) that can add value above and beyond distribution-oriented approaches. An exploration along these lines will be presented as it pertains to convective mode from both a case study and statistical perspective.
