During June 2002, two tropical cyclones formed east of the Philippines in association with a convectively coupled Kelvin wave. This wave traveled from the Arabian Sea to the eastern North Pacific over a period of 11 days. Both storms developed as the Kelvin wave intensified within the convective envelope of the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Evidence suggests that the invigorated Kelvin wave enhanced the background convection and low-level vorticity for cyclogenesis. The evolution of both the Kelvin wave and the MJO and their role in the genesis of the two tropical cyclones will be explored in this study.
