6B.1 Climatology of Dvorak classifications to support operational probabilistic tropical cyclogenesis forecasts

The Tropical Analysis and Forecast Branch (TAFB) at the National Hurricane Center (NHC), and analysts at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC), create Dvorak intensity estimates for all classifiable tropical systems, from incipient disturbances through tropical cyclones at all intensities. By collecting all TAFB and CPHC Dvorak classifications during 2001-2009 into a standardized database, a tropical cyclogenesis climatology has been composed for the central North Pacific, eastern North Pacific, and North Atlantic basins. Using historical relationships derived from this record, a rudimentary experimental guidance product is created and gives the probability of tropical cyclogenesis for any system classified by the Dvorak technique. This statistical chance of tropical cyclone formation serves as a baseline for future, more advanced genesis prediction techniques used to produce probabilistic genesis guidance, especially for use in genesis probabilities in the Tropical Weather Outlook products issued by NHC and CPHC.
