How and Why the AMS Seal Program Got Started

On March 3-4 1956 the first National Conference and Workshop on Radio and Television Presentation of Weather was held in Hartford, Connecticut under the sponsorship of the AMS. The desireability and need of setting standards for weather broadcasts on radio and television was discussed and a committee formed under the chairmanship of Dr. Francis Davis of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia. Their report, presented to the AMS Council in April 1957,was approved and the formation of the first board was approved and subsequently put into operation by 1959.
