At the start of the year 2000, I became the Chief Meteorologist at a station about to embark on an ambitious journey. Recently purchased by a media group, the station planned to change call letters, build a new building and forge a new identity in a market where it was perennially fourth. Beside questioning my sanity daily, I began jotting down some of the things that happened. This paper describes some of the high and low points and gives the reader some things to consider. Few may have the same chance to build from nothing; I’d like to share what I’ve learned. It can be quite a leap from weekend or morning weather anchor to the main spot. Since there is very little “how-to” in this business; I’d like to submit my experience for others – if for nothing more than food-for-thought.
