While suppressed-to-deep-convective transitions within Madden-Julian Oscillations occur on biweekly time scales, shallow-to-deep tropical convection transitions can occur on much shorter hourly time scales. The relationship between these two time scales is explored using three-dimensional humidity and liquid water content fields retrieved from remote sensors (microwave radiometer and dual-wavelength radar) located on Gan, Maldives, as part of the DYNAMO experiment. These fields consist of coarse-vertical-resolution remotely-sensed humidity profiles, and, spatially-resolved lower-tropospheric humidity and liquid water content fields. For this presentation, we explore the ability of remote sensors to provide this information, and include preliminary findings on the spatial and vertical characteristics of such transitions.
