Recent work has demonstrated that convectively coupled atmospheric Kelvin waves (CCKW) modulate organized convection within the active convective region of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO). This convection is the dominant source of potential vorticity (PV) within the MJO events when CCKWs are present. This presentation builds from previous work by completing a census of associations between the MJO and CCKWs along with a demonstration of how these waves influence the PV budget of the MJO.
