Various research simulations over the past few years have shown advantages to forecasting capability of simulating hurricanes at near-convective scale resolutions (nominally, 1-4 km grid spacing). After several years of experimentation, EMC and HRD have worked together to bring a 3km version of the HWRF model into operations at NCEP. The small amount of resources available in operations led to many scientific and technical challenges. This talk discusses how those challenges were overcome.
