Using a single-Doppler radar wind retrieval technique to examine structural changes in Hurricane Danny (1997)

It has been demonstrated that the primary circulation in a tropical cyclone can be retrieved reasonably well by the ground-based velocity track display technique(GBVTD). Lee and Marks (2000) showed that an accurate tropical cyclone center is important in deducing the hurricane wind field structure for the GBVTD technique. We will present Hurricane Danny's (1997) evolution of structure in the wind fields and centers deduced from the GBVTD technique. Danny was sampled simultaneously by two WSR-88D radars (KMOB and KLIX) over a five hour period. Other observations, such as dual-Doppler analysis, dropsonde, and in situ measurements from NOAA WD-P3 and Air force C-130, provided independent assessment of the tropical cyclone centers and storm structure.
