EPA's SunWise Meteorologist Outreach Project
Jason P. Samenow, EPA, Washington, DC; and L. G. Wilcut
EPA's SunWise School Program was developed to educate children about sun protection and ultra-violet (UV) radiation, while encouraging sun-safe behaviors. The program is designed for grades K-8. It is a collaborative effort of schools, communities, teachers, parents, health professionals, environmental groups, meteorologists, educational organizations, and others.
EPA has developed an On-Camera Meteorologist (OCM) SunWise Packet to encourage OCM's to demonstrate SunWise activities when visiting schools. The packet contains a UV meter, a UV sensitive frisbee and sun-safe outreach materials. The packet also encourages OCM's to report the UV Index in their weathercasts and promote sun protection action steps.
