A prototype single-Doppler wind retrieval system is developed for real-time applications of NEXRAD Level-II data by the Data Assimilation Group at NSSL and CIMMS/OU. This system contains 4 major components to perform 4 steps of operations: (1) level II data fetching and decoding, (2) input data quality controlling, (3) 2dVar vector wind retrieving and the product quality checking (4) graphic displaying. This system has been running since June 2002 on a small but dedicated workstation to retrieve high-resolution vector wind fields using real-time WSR-88D Level II data from eight radars and produce real-time displays of the retrieved vector winds with data files on-line. The reliability of this real-time system and the quality of the retrieval products have been monitored since then. The problems encountered and solutions will be reported at the conference.
