NEXRAD Level II and Beyond - What’s in it for Broadcasters?
William J. Callahan, WSI Corporation, Andover, MA
During the past year a great deal of effort has been exerted by the National Weather Service as well as the private sector weather vendors on making WSR-88D Level II data available for commercial use. Availability of this data-rich information creates new opportunities for radar visualizations and provides stations with innovative approaches to covering breaking weather.
This presentation will highlight the methods by which NEXRAD Level II is being collected and disseminated, the key attributes of this information, and the advanced storm analysis capabilities facilitated by use of these data.
In addition, there are several other initiatives underway within NOAA worth mentioning today and monitoring going forward. These include the incorporation of advanced scanning strategies and deployment of emerging technologies - each will have significant impacts on radar data quality and utility within the broadcast community over the next several years. These topics and what they may mean to you will be briefly explored.
