5B.4 Assessing the Skill and Variability of Objective Ensemble Based Tropical Cyclogenesis Forecasts

Tuesday, 17 April 2018: 8:45 AM
Masters ABCD (Sawgrass Marriott)
Alan Brammer, SUNY, Albany, NY; and C. D. Thorncroft and J. P. Dunion

An ensemble based tropical cyclogenesis product has been developed to provide objective probabilistic forecasts over the Atlantic and eastern Pacific. This presentation will discuss the skill of global numerical forecasts for tropical cyclogenesis. This analysis will include discussion of the regional influences on the skill, highlighting areas where the models tend to perform better and through ensemble based sensitivity analysis the reasons for these differences. The impact of both the MJO and convectively coupled kelvin waves on ensemble forecast skill will also be presented.
